£15m Spurs swoop should be our No.1 priority

Luke Maxwell feels that Gareth Bale should be Aston Villa's No.1 priority when
the January window opens.

When it was announced in the last week that Randy Lerner was
setting aside a cool £30m for Martin O'Neill in the January window, the press
are doing their level best to spend it for the Villa boss. Every single day they
are attempting to plug the deficiencies within our squad, from full back, right
through to strikers, with Emile Heskey and Roque Santa Cruz being the latest
names to join the seemingly ever growing list.

I look at the Villa squad and it's fair to say that we are a
striker light and will certainly be a priority in the January window. The other
area that needs improvement, highlighted no more so than Gareth Barry this
week, is a top class left back that will bring natural balance to the backline,
and not to mention someone who can take the pressure of Ashley Young on the
left hand side.

I think half the problem with the Villa set-up at present is that there
is a real lack of versatility within our team, which makes us look predictable
at times and easy to mark. I think we look better when Ashley Young is given a
free role, behind the striker, but unfortunately we haven't a decent full back
who can provide the balance and subsequently O'Neill is forced into a flat
4-4-2. I know who we should bring in, but whether we can attract him to Villa
Park is another matter.

I believe Gareth Bale to be an excellent footballer and there aren't
many better youngsters coming through the game. So much is already known about
the Welshman's talents from dead-ball situations and is one of the finest
crossers in the division, but what makes him appealing is the versatility he
brings to the side, where he is equally adept at playing left midfield as he is
at full back. He is one of very few players who has that ability, with possibly
Ashley Cole the only exception to have such gifts and I just feel he will bring
so much to our squad and give the option of freeing up Ashley Young in a more
central role.

What do Villa fans feel about a move for Gareth Bale and whether
we can attract him to Villa Park? Spurs are struggling big time and we in all
honesty have taken over their mantle as the side most likely to challenge the
top four. There is no doubt that Aston Villa under Martin is an extremely
appealing especially with our British contingent and I just feel we should test
the water with a £15m bid in January.
