Manchester United and Liverpool have been boosted in their chase for Christian Benteke after it was revealed that he will not sign a new Aston Villa contract, Daily Star reports.
The 24-year-old was set to be given a new contract which would make him the highest paid player in the club’s history with an offer worth £75,000-a-week.
However, Benteke’s agent, Kismet Eris, has now revealed that the Belgium international will not sign the proposed extension and is ready to leave Villa Park in the summer.
“One thing is for sure. Christian will do whatever is possible legally, by insisting if he has to, to leave Aston Villa,” he said.
“That is not because he is not happy at all, it’s because just he wants to play for a higher team.
“Whatever happens he will not sign a new contract, but I can only talk about a new contract when it is proposed. As for now, there is nothing.”
Apart from United and the Reds, Arsenal and Chelsea are also keeping a close eye on the striker.
He became a top striking target for a host of Premier League sides after bursting into form in the second half of the campaign following his return from an injury.
The attacker has played a total of 35 matches in all competitions this term, scoring 16 goals and providing an additional three assists.
