Napoli star Gonzalo Higuain rejected a move to Chelsea after he was informed that he will not be playing ahead of Diego Costa in the pecking order, the Daily Mail reports.
Higuain was heavily linked with a move away from the Stadio San Paolo last month, with the Blues monitoring his situation amid their search for another centre forward.
However, the Premier League champions signed Alexandre Pato from Corinthians instead, with the Brazilian arriving on a loan deal.
Yet, it has now been revealed that Chelsea were prepared to spend up to £40million to sign Higuain from Napoli, who are top of Serie A due, in part, to his incredible form.
The Argentine snubbed the move though, with Blues interim boss Guus Hiddink unable to guarantee first-team football with Diego Costa also in their ranks.
Costa struggled earlier in the season under Jose Mourinho, but is now back on track with seven goals since Hiddink’s appointment in December.
Higuain, 28, has made 29 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring 26 goals.
