West Ham United centre-back Jose Fonte has apologised to the club's supporters following Friday night's 3-0 defeat at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Glenn Murray (2) and Jose Izquierdo were both on the scoresheet at the London Stadium as Brighton shocked West Ham in the Premier League.

The stands emptied when Brighton scored their third of the match in the 75th minute, and the pressure is now firmly on Hammers boss Slaven Bilic.

Indeed, a total of eight points from nine matches has left the team down in 17th position in the Premier League table.

Fonte has offered his apologies to the club's supporters following the heavy defeat, but has insisted that the team will bounce back when they travel to bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

Fonte, who is rated at £6.3m by transfermarkt.co.uk, told West Ham's official website:

“We are all disappointed, we are all frustrated and we apologise. It was not the performance we wanted to produce and it wasn’t the performance the fans deserve.

“We need to look at ourselves in the mirror because this cannot happen. It happened a few times last season, and we have to put this right. This is West Ham and it’s just not possible [to let this happen].

“We have got to move on. We have a game Wednesday and we need to go and beat Spurs because we have to react, we have to bounce back.”

West Ham's next Premier League match is away to basement side Crystal Palace on October 28.
