Adkins keen to keep England ace amid Liverpool rumours

Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy

Reading manager Nigel Adkins is desperate to keep young goalkeeper Alex McCarthy this summer despite interest from the big clubs building.

Adkins will do everything he can to keep the impressive stopper but the Championship may not be the step McCarthy was looking for after his England call up by Roy Hodgson for upcoming friendlies.

Liverpool have stepped up their interest after resigning themselves to losing Pepe Reina to Barcelona this summer.

Brendan Rodgers worked with McCarthy when he was at the Royals and will make a sizeable bid in the coming weeks.

Adkins understands that interest will be high for his young goalkeeper but he will do everything he can to keep him in the Championship next season.

“Everybody’s value will increase, especially if they have just been called up to the international squad,” Adkins told the Daily Star.

“But we’re not looking to sell Alex. He’s come through our system and it’s fantastic for him and the club.”
