Africa Cup of Nations thrown into doubt after host nation pulls out

The staging of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations – which is scheduled to start in January – has been thrown into doubt after Morocco refused to host the tournament due to fears over the Ebola virus.

The football association of Morocco had asked for the competition to be postponed before refusing to meet the ultimatum set by the Confederation of African Football to confirm whether or not they would proceed to host the event.

“The decision is dictated by health reasons because of the serious threat of Ebola and the risk of its spreading,” read a statement issued by Morocco’s sports ministry.

There are now fears that the tournament will be cancelled altogether as the CAF desperately search for a willing host nation to replace Morocco.

However, no nations have yet come forward as prospective emergency hosts, which means that the event could be cancelled at great financial cost.
