Liverpool compounded Arsenal’s misery at a rain-soaked Emirates with a 2-0 victory. An own goal from the unlucky Aaron Ramsey and then a second late striker from substitute Luis Suarez eased Kenny Dalglish’s side to victory in a match that again saw Arsenal end with 10 men.
Arsenal were dealt an early blow when centre-back Laurent Koscielny was forced off with an injury, meaning another inexperienced defender was bought into the action in the shape of Ignasi Miquel.
Whilst Liverpool dominated the game against a weakened Arsenal they struggled to make the breakthrough. But the away side were handed an advantage when Arsenal were reduced to ten men in the second half. Young midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong showed his inexperience when, on a yellow card, he clattered Lucas and was rightly shown a second yellow.
Kenny Dalglish responded immediately by bringing on Suarez and Raul Meireles and the substitutes made the difference for Liverpool. The visitors’ first involved a huge slice of luck as Miquel’s clearance smacked off the unfortunate Ramsey and into the net. It was a goal that summed up Arsenal’s difficult summer and start to the season.
Liverpool’s second came late on to seal the win, Arsenal’s defence fell apart as Meireles slipped the ball across to Suarez who had an easy tap in. It was another blow to Arsenal and Wenger as the pressure mounts around the disillusioned Emirates.
