Arsenal and Manchester United are considering a loan move for Barcelona newbie Thomas Vermaelen in hopes of bringing him back to the English Premier League despite only completing his switch in the summer, Express reports.
The 29-year-old joined the Spanish giants for £15million in the summer but is yet to make an appearance and has only recently returned to first team training.
However, it is believed that the chances of him being selected ahead of Javier Mascherano, Jeremy Mathieu, and Gerard Pique is highly unlikely as the two English sides are targeting him in bids to solve their defensive woes.
Luis Enrique is said to be open to letting his centre-back out on loan for the rest of the current campaign so that he can return to full fitness, but has made it clear that he won’t be sold.
Both Arsene Wenger and Louis van Gaal have a huge shortage when in comes to their defensive selections with both managers forced to use makeshift centre-backs.
The Gunners have on more that one occasion used left-back Nacho Monreal in the middle of his defence while Van Gaal has been using midfielders such as Daley Blind, Michael Carrick, as well as Darren Fletcher to fill that role in recent weeks.
