Arsenal and Tottenham hit with transfer blow as defensive target pens new deal

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are likely to end their chase for Winston Reid, after the defender decided to sign a new contract extension with West Ham United, according to reports from the BBC.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a free transfer in the summer to the two mentioned clubs, while Manchester United and Liverpool were also interested in his services.

Despite being tipped to leave Upton Park at the end of the season, Reid has made a U-turn regarding his decision by signing a new six-and-a-half-year deal with the club.

The New Zealand international revealed that it took some time, while also thanking co-chairman David Sullivan in pushing him towards a stay.

“It’s one of those things that took a bit of time, but we got there in the end,” he said.

“He was clearly very committed to getting the deal done and keeping me at the club, so I’d like to thank him for that.”

He caught the eye of a number of Premier League clubs due to his impressive performances for the Hammers in the early stages of the campaign, but looks to have ended all interest with his latest revelation.

Reid has now become the squad’s third player to extend their contract in the past month, with James Tomkins and Mark Noble also recently signing new deals.
