Arsenal and Tottenham have joined the race to sign Shakhtar Donetsk star Douglas Costa on a loan deal, Daily Mail reports.
Ukraine is currently embroiled with internal conflict, causing six Shakhtar players, including Costa, to refuse on returning to their club.
This had alerted Europe’s elite in offering the Brazilian an exit route, with AC Milan, AS Roma, and the two London clubs interested in his services.
However Shakhtar are looking to keep their star assets after owner Rinat Akhmetov stated: “There won’t be a clearance sale.”
The 23-year-old playmaker himself insisted that he is not attempting to force a transfer, but that he fears for his life and is looking to seek refuge by training in Switzerland with the other five absent in Ukraine.
Costa posted on his Instagram that the team: “all run a deadly risk if we are in the region.”
He also wrote: “I like the club, the people, the city, but I’m afraid.
“’We want to stay at the club, but we must have risk-free working conditions”
Arsenal and Spurs are expected to prepare a loan offer for Costa shortly, with the player already having Champions League experience for the Ukraine club.
