Spanish club Rayo Vallecano have emerged as the favourites to sign the Romanian international, despite him being linked with a switch to north London.
Arsenal were the most heavily linked at the start of the month after failing to sign a striker during the transfer window. Wenger’s interest in the forward – who was released by Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 – appears to have cooled, with arch rivals Tottenham being credited with an interest since.
But it appears Marica is now destined for Spain, with it seeming more likely he will play regular first team football at Rayo Vallecano.
Arsenal wanted Marica as back up for main striker Olivier Giroud, with the other out-and-out strikers on the clubs books being Nicklas Bendtner, Park Chu-Young and 18-year-old Frenchman Yaya Sanogo.
Whilst Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski can play as a central striker if needed, Wenger prefers to use both in the wide positions, so will therefore be praying Giroud can stay fit.
Meanwhile Andre Villas-Boas is thought to be keen to add another forward to the ranks, with Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor’s futures still up in the air.
Neither have started a Premier League game this season, although Defoe netted a brace in last nights 4-0 win over Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup.
