Arsenal boss admits ongoing fitness gamble

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that Jack Wilshere is still suffering pain in his ankles and has doubts over the midfielder’s long term fitness, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Wilshere has had consistent injury problems over the past two years and although the energetic midfield man is fit to play for the Gunners today against Southampton, Wenger knows he has to manage the situation carefully.

These latest revelations may well put Wilshere’s England place in jeopardy, with games coming thick and fast in the World Cup.

Wenger has put his faith in his medical department to tell him when and where the 21 year old can feature for the Gunners and Roy Hodgson may have to do likewise.

‘We play 60 games per year and Jack will certainly have to be managed – unless his pains go completely, then he will be used when needed,’ said Wenger

‘If there is an alert on his ankles, we will of course take advice from the medical department and use him when he can really be used.’

‘I have been told by the medical team that there is no concern in the long term. He is just still recovering from his inflammation.’
