Arsenal boss praises fighting intent after Newcastle victory

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has praised his team’s performance after securing a 3-0 victory over Newcastle as they edge closer to holding on to 4th place.

With Everton failing to capitalize from their earlier victory against Arsenal, Wenger’s men bounced back to win three consecutive games and saw the Toffees lose two, putting Roberto Martinez’s hopes of Champions League football potentially out of reach.

The Gunners are now four points clear in fourth spot with only two games left to play and look firm favourites to take part in the Champions League for a 17th consecutive season.

“We have gone through a difficult period, and Goodison Park was one of them,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“I believe that the spirit in the side is healthy, strong, determined and you can see that when the team is capable of bouncing back after a big disappointment.”

Laurent Koscielny opened the scoring before Mesut Ozil scored the second and assisted Olivier Giroud for the third, gifting Wenger’s men a vital 3-0 victory over Alan Pardew’s side.

The Arsenal manager was full of praise for his record signing as he looks towards the future for his German superstar.

Wenger added: “He is getting stronger in every game now. He’s refreshed.

“It’s his first season over here and over Christmas he suffered a bit physically. Now he looks sharp again and refreshed, mentally sharp to play and that’s why his performance is good.

“I believe that the first season is always about adaptation in the Premier League.

“What he has brought is fantastic technique, simplicity in his game, intelligence of passing. If you look at his numbers, his assists and his passes in the final third are very good.

“We want some more goals from him and I think that will come naturally.”
