Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger revealed that he was monitoring the situation of new Manchester United star Anthony Martial before his £36million move, according to reports from the Metro.
The 19-year-old is now the most expensive teenager in world football following his transfer from Monaco, with the fee expected to rise to £58.8million based on his performance.
A number of people have been criticizing manager Louis van Gaal for his purchase of the forward, claiming that he made a panic-buy on transfer deadline day.
However, Wenger admitted that Martial is a top player, but didn’t make a move because of the high level of competition on the wings.
“We [have] known him since he was a kid, but he’s more of a winger type,” he said.
“He’s an exceptional talent I agree with you but I believe that he plays in positions where we have players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexis Sanchez and Joel Campbell who can play in the position.”
It is also believed that the Gunners will not match the fee tabled by the Red Devils, with sources claiming Van Gaal overpaid about £20million for his services.
He featured 48 times in all competitions for his side last term, scoring a total of 12 goals while providing a further five assists.
