Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is shocked by Manchester United’s staggering £36million deal for Anthony Martial from Monaco, according to reports from the Express.
The Red Devils completed a deadline day deal for Martial via a £36million fee, but some reports suggest that it could rise to £58million following add-ons.
United were desperate to sign an attacker after their struggles to score goals early in the season, but Wenger is bewildered by the sum Monaco received for the 19-year-old, making him the most expensive teenager in the history of football.
“Martial scored 11 goals in the French championship – that sums it up,” he said.
However, the Frenchman went on to add that he doesn’t believe it’s about the money, but the fact that there seems to be so little real talent that can help aid the top clubs.
Wenger continued: “That means it’s not the money that’s missing at the moment, it’s not the desire of investment that is missing, it’s the number of players available who can strengthen the big clubs.
“The problem is finding the players that guarantee you are a better team, and that example shows you very well.
“Martial is a huge talent – he’s 19 years old. The investment is absolutely huge. It shows there’s not many players in the world who can strengthen these teams.”
Wenger has been criticized lately over the lack of spending in the summer transfer market, with only Petr Cech arriving from Chelsea in a £10million deal earlier in the window.
