Arsenal are closing in on FC Basel defender Fabian Schar in a £9.5million deal, Metro reports.
The Gunners have been suffering defensively due to their injury woes, and it has been suggested that manager Arsene Wenger is extremely keen on signing a centre-back during the winter transfer window.
Wenger has been tracking Swiss international Fabian Schar for some time now, with reports now signifying that the Gunners are set to conclude a £9.5million transfer of the player in January.
The 22-year-old recently stated he would like to leave Basel in order to compete in the Premier League amid interest from Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
However with Arsenal so desperate for defenders, it is therefore no surprise the Gunners hierarchy have stolen a march on their Premier League rivals for Schar’s signature.
The former FC Wil 1900 youngster was also part of the Switzerland World Cup squad that made it to the knock-out stages in Brazil this past summer.
Schar has played 56 games in the league for FC Basel since 2012, scoring nine goals.
