Arsenal are hoping to complete a £10million move for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, according to Metro.
Smalling was close to signing for the Gunners in 2010 before he decided to move to Old Trafford instead.
And he was also a target for Arsene Wenger in the summer transfer window, but a move never managed to materialise after a both sides couldn’t come to an agreement.
The 24-year-old is expected to be allowed to leave Old Trafford in January as Louis Van Gaal looks to rebuild his injury-ravaged defence to compliment the strength he has in attack.
Wenger is desperate to add to his defence and sees Smalling’s ability to play centre-back, right-back or as a defensive midfielder as an ideal solution to his defensive problems.
