Arsenal are on the verge of upsetting Manchester United after they revealed their top defensive targets for the upcoming January window, with Chris Smalling and Ron Vlaar included, Daily Mail reports.
Arsene Wenger has seen his shaky defence exploited in midweek as he has also added Celtic’s Virgil van Djik to the list, completing his top three candidates to fix his back line.
Having already targeted the trio during the summer, the Gunners are once again planning solid offers in order to lure at least one of the names to add to their two man centre-back pairing of Per Mertesacker and a now injured Laurent Koscielny.
Vlaar, who is also a top target for Louis van Gaal is tipped to depart Aston Villa in January as the club don’t want to lose him for free when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Elsewhere, Smalling, who is under heavy criticism from the Red Devils’ supporters for his poor showing against Manchester City last week, is also another target for Wenger as his exit could add even more burden on United’s already injury prone defence .
