Sporting Lisbon have lowered their asking price for holding midfielder William Carvalho, opening the door for Arsenal to make a possible swoop, Express reports.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with Carvalho all summer, and have been boosted by reports claiming Sporting will accept £24million for the Portuguese international, £11m less than the original fee.
The Premiera Liga club do however want Carvalho to return back on loan for one additional season, until they can find an adequate replacement.
Several Arsenal players, such as Yaya Sanogo, Serge Gnarby and Francis Coquelin, are of interest to Sporting and could be used to sweeten the deal for Carvalho.
After chasing Sami Khedira and Morgan Schneiderlin for much of the summer, Arsene Wenger has made finding a defensive midfielder a top priority albeit with no success so far.
The Arsenal midfield is full of attacking talent with Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, and Aaron Ramsey all looking to make an impact in the final third.
However the London club do not possess a world class anchorman in their ranks, with Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta deemed by fans to be not at the same level as the likes of Man City’s Yaya Toure or Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic.
