The Gunners have struggled with injuries across the back four over the past 12 months or so but manager Arsene Wenger decided against bringing any defenders in over the summer.
With the long term injuries to Thomas Vermaelen, Mertesacker has stepped in to become the key man in the famous Arsenal back four and the German is set to be rewarded with a bumper contract extension that could keep the 28 year old in North London for the remainder of his career.
Sagna is out of contract at the end of this season and previous extension negotiations have failed to result in a new deal being signed but the Gunners are now prepared to cave in to the Frenchman’s wage demands.
The additions of Mesut Ozil and Mathieu Flamini have bolsted the Arsenal midfield but injuries to key defenders could be catastrophic for Wenger and his plans for the season.
