Arsenal have jumped ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Charlton wonderkid Joe Gomez, according to reports from the Daily Star.
Gomez has had an impressive breakthrough campaign in the Championship this season, alerting a host of top clubs to keep tabs on the youngster.
And Charlton will be demanding at least £8million for the centre-back, despite Gomez still only 17 years old.
However, it seems that the Gunners are in pole position to sign Gomez in the summer due to the good relationship between the two clubs.
Only earlier this season, Arsenal loaned out now star midfielder Francis Coquelin to the Valley, and back in 2011 the Gunners also purchased English right-back Carl Jenkinson from the Addicks.
Arsenal were struggling with a lack of defenders earlier in the campaign, and hopes that the purchase of Gomez can help avoid another injury crisis next season.
Gomez has played 23 times for Charlton all competitions this season, scoring no goals.
