Arsenal are set to challenge Manchester United in the race to sign Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, Daily Star reports.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for a centre-back recently and manager Arsene Wenger is considering a bid for Laporte this January.
However Manchester United are also chasing the 20-year-old, with the Red Devils in dire need of a centre-back.
Arsenal have been heavily criticized for the way they’ve conceded goals while in the lead, shown by their collapse against Anderlecht in the Champions League when the Gunners were three goals in front.
Former Arsenal ace Paul Merson even went to call the defenders “clueless”, but Wenger has been unlucky with injuries to key players Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny.
However the failure to find a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen has forced the French manager to target a centre-back in January, and Laporte has come into consideration as they find priority target Mats Hummels too expensive to sign from Borussia Dortmund.
Laporte, 20, has already made 59 appearances for Bilbao and has played for France’s youth setup.
