Arsenal are ready to rival Manchester United for the signature of Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels, according to the Daily Mirror.
United have been heavily linked with a move for the German World Cup winner, and despite Dortmund’s insistence he is not for sale, it is understood an offer of £30million would be accepted by the Bundesliga club.
And Arsene Wenger has been asked to be kept informed of the players availability, in the hope of pipping Louis van Gaal to his signing before the Premier League returns.
United have targeted Arsenal’s club captain Thomas Vermaelen, who has just one year left to run on his current contract at the Emirates.
Van Gaal is said to be preparing a £12million bid for the Belgian, meaning Arsenal may well look towards Hummels as a replacement.
Wenger remains confident of persuading the 25-year-old to make the switch to north London, with international teammates Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil already at the club, whilst the Gunners also have Champions League football to look forward to next season.
Van Gaal meanwhile is keen to sign at least two centre backs following the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic this summer.
