Arsenal legend Paul Merson insists that if Leicester City or Tottenham Hotspur win the league this season, his former club must sack Arsene Wenger, according to reports from Sky Sports.
With the likes of champions Chelsea and Manchester City having below par campaigns, the Gunners have one of the best chances to win the English top flight since their last title in 2004.
However, despite the usual challengers struggling, Wenger’s men are still trailing the race in third, five points behind shock leaders Leicester City and three behind second place Tottenham.
And Merson, who spent 12 years with Arsenal playing over 416 games, claims the his ex-side must sack the Frenchman if they fail to win the league again this season, citing to their lack of summer transfers as one of the main reasons for their current position.
“If Man City don’t win the league and Tottenham or Leicester do then Arsene Wenger has to go,” he said.
“If you’re sitting there telling those fans – loyal Arsenal fans – that they don’t need any new players at the start of the season and then you don’t win the league in front of Leicester or Tottenham then I don’t see how you can justify it.
“If Man City win the league he can turn around and say ‘they’ve got all the money in the world and can go and buy whoever they want, so would whoever I bought have made much difference?’
“But if Leicester or Tottenham win the league after he said they didn’t need any players then I don’t see how he can keep his job.”
Arsenal host Swansea City in a must-win game at the Emirates this Wednesday, with another loss capable of widening the gap to a massive eight points.
