Arsenal are targeting a move for young Empoli defender Daniele Rugani, despite the Gunners being close to sealing a deal for Villarreal centre-back Gabriel Paulista, according to reports from the Metro.
Sources from Italy have claimed that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been monitoring the young Italian, who has had an impressive first half of the season, playing 19 games and scoring two goals.
Co-owned by Italian champions Juventus, the Bianconeri are looking to sign Rugani outright before the end of the season.
However the Gunners are also keen on the 20-year-old, and are set to add some competition in the race to secure his signature.
But even if Arsenal fail in their chase for Rugani, the Emirates club are close to completing the deal for Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal after the Brazilian was able to obtain a work permit.
The two clubs came to an agreement over a £11.3million transfer fee last week, with the move expected to be announced officially in the coming days.
