Arsenal are set to make a shock £12million bid for Manchester United star Chris Smalling this summer, according to reports from the Mirror.
Smalling was a target for the Gunners back in 2010, but the defender decided to make the switch to Old Trafford from Fulham.
The 25-year-old’’s recent impressive performances have put him in line for a new contract with the Red Devils, however, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is considering making an offer amid talks.
With only over a year left on his current contract, Smalling may be sold by the Red Devils this summer to avoid losing him for free in 2016.
Several other United players will only have one year remaining on their contracts at the start of next season, including goalkeeper David de Gea, Robin van Persie, Jonny Evans, and on-loan attacker Javier Hernandez.
However, although Man United manager Louis van Gaal will be keen to keep De Gea and Van Persie, Evans and Hernandez could be sold if a right offer was to be made.
