Arsenal set to table late bid to sign Manchester United’s defensive target

Arsenal are said to be preparing a late move to sign Manchester United target Ron Vlaar who is being urged to remain at Villa Park, Daily Star reports.

After seeing his bid for Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos rejected as well as seeing Thomas Vermaelen depart to Barcelona, Arsene Wenger is now making an attempt to sign Vlaar from Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old had a very impressive World Cup run at the back, helping the Dutch national team reach the semi-finals of the tournament where they lost out on penalties to Argentina.

With only one year left on his current deal at Villa, Wenger will try to lure him away for a very reasonable price, despite his manager Paul Lambert edging him to remain at the club given their good run of form.

They are currently lying in third place of the English Premier League, picking up seven points from their first three games of the campaign.
