Arsenal skipper set for summer Italy move

Arsenal centre back Thomas Vermaelen is closing in on a move to Italy this summer, as reported by football-Italia.

Vermaelen’s agent has confirmed that he has already been approached by a number of Serie A clubs over the possibility of signing his client although a deal may not be done until after the World Cup.

The Belgian international has failed to cement a place in the Gunners side this season with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny impressive at the heart of the Arsenal midfield.

Napoli are the front runner to sign Vermaelen, with Inter and Juventus also keen, however Arsene Wenger is not willing to simply let his club captain go on the cheap.

Agent Alex Kroes is waiting until after today’s FA Cup final before sitting down with Vermaelen to discuss his future although the interest is certainly there for the 28 year old central defender.

“Many Italian clubs have shown an interest,” he told La Repubblica.

“But we’ll have to wait until after the World Cup to discuss Thomas’ future.”
