Arsenal stand firm to deny Besiktas and book place in the Champions League proper

Despite having to finish the final 15 minutes a man down, Arsenal held Besiktas and capitalized on their 0-0 first leg aggregate with a 1-0 victory.

New signing Alexis Sanchez had a few chances to give his side the lead but was unable to convert until his first half injury-time strike secured his Gunners goal.

Arsene Wenger’s squad looked very lively throughout the match creating a vast number of opportunities as they attacked their opponents with real intent.

The red card to Mathieu Debuchy late on was a major talking point after the right-back looked to have pushed the referee as he voiced his anger towards the decision, an act that could lead to further punishment.

With Demba Ba almost giving his side a vital winner late on, the final whistle at the Emirates meant Wenger can now prepare his side for the Champions League group stages as well as consider some extra striking options.
