Arsenal star set for new deal

Per Mertesacker

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the Gunners are opening talks with defender Per Mertesacker over a new contract, as reported by talkSPORT.

Mertesacker scored the winner at Wembley on Tuesday night as Germany overcame England in an international friendly and the 29 year old is enjoying some of the best form of his career.

Now a key player for club and country, Arsenal are hoping to tie Mertesacker down for the remainder of his career with just 18 months remaining on his current deal.

For the past few seasons many have believed Arsenal’s central defence to be their weakest area but this seasons’ performances of Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have certainly changed many perspectives of that.

Wenger is keen to get a deal done with Mertesacker as soon as possible to avoid talk of a return to Germany gathering any real pace.

“He has one and a half years to go, so that is a long time. We are in the process of talking, yes,” Wenger told talkSPORT.
