Arsenal to offer new long term deal

Address expiring contracts

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has urged the board to offer defender Per Mertesacker a new contract with the North London club, according to the Daily Mirror.

Wenger has been impressed with the German international who is now one of the first names on the Gunners’ team sheet each week.

Mertesacker turns 29 today and the birthday boy looks set to celebrate by being offered a three year deal to keep him at the Emirates for the rest of his career.

The lanky central defender has just over 18 months remaining on his current contract and Wenger hopes this new deal will persuade him not to return to his native Germany next summer.

Borussia Dortmund and former club Werder Bremen want to sign the experienced defender who has been made Arsenal vice-captain at the Emirates.

With fellow Germans Mesut Ozil, Lukas Podolski and Serge Gnarby also in the Arsenal first team, Mertesacker feels at home in North London and is set to sign the new deal promptly.
