Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has confirmed that record signing Asamoah Gyan will make his first start for the club in the Carling Cup.
The Black Cats host West Ham United in a third-round encounter on Tuesday evening and the £13million transfer window signing will be in the starting line-up for the first time.
The Ghana World Cup star has scored one goal in two substitute appearances since arriving at the Stadium of Light from Rennes last month.
“Asamoah Gyan will play because it is the right sort of game for him and he needs as much physical work into him as possible,” confirmed Bruce.
“We will use the cup competition for him to start his first game because he needs the physical work.”
Gyan opened his Sunderland account with the opening goal in a 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on September 11.
