Aston Villa boss never worried about striker stay

Christian Benteke

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has claimed that he was never concerned with the Christian Benteke fiasco after the striker signed a new long term deal at the club.

Benteke handed in a written transfer request just two weeks ago but has now been convinced to stay at Villa Park and even commit for a further few seasons.

The Belgian forward was wanted by Tottenham and Arsenal but Lambert has convinced the Villains top goalscorer from last season to stay, which he always knew he would do.

Lambert believes that Aston Villa is the best place for Benteke to be with a young squad forming and looking to improve on last season’s lowly finish.

“If I’m honest I was never worried he was going to leave because I knew the contract had three years left on it and I didn’t pay much attention into will he or won’t he leave,” Lambert told talkSPORT.

“I knew if I could speak with him then I could persuade him that Aston Villa was the best place for him and I’m glad that everything went well there.

“His performance levels have been really, really high for us and all that speculation, that I had to lay to rest quickly because it was dragging on, wasn’t helpful to Christian Benteke or Aston Villa.

“I think we had a really good conversation and I was full and frank with him and, in my opinion, the best thing for him was to stay at Aston Villa for another year.”
