Aston Villa boss weighs up move for former duo

New Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish looks set to launch a raid on former club Birmingham City, according to Mirror Football.

The Scotsman is keen on taking goalkeeper Ben Foster and centre-back Scott Dann to his new club after his controversial switch across the City but will have to first meet Birmingham’s valuations of the players.

Former England goalkeeper Foster only joined Birmingham last summer form Manchester United in a £4 million deal. He featured in 37 of the club’s 38 league games and was named the club’s Player of the Season. Villa are looking for a replacement for veteran Brad Friedel who has moved to Tottenham on a free transfer but will have to pay upwards of £8 million for the 28-year old.

Former England Under-21 international Dann was initially linked with Arsenal, Liverpool and, more recently Stoke. However, Villa could be first to move for the 24-year old who moved from Coventry 2 years ago in a £3.5 million deal. Dann would cost around £12 million but Birmingham would be reluctant to sell two prized assets to their bitter rivals.

Despite winning the Carling Cup Birmingham were relegated from the Premier League having finished in 18th place. Kevin Phillips, Lee Bowyer, Maik Taylor and Seb Larsson have already left the club with Cameron Jerome, Barry Ferguson and Craig Gardner also linked with moves away from the club.
