Despite a poor season finishing in 9th place, the Villa pair have been in fine form. With the club today announcing the departure of manager Gerrard Houllier, the future of certain players is said to be more uncertain.
Young has scored 7 goals in 34 games this season but is entering the final year of his contract and the 25-year old has regularly been linked with both Manchester United and Liverpool. He was signed for £9.75 million in January 2007 and Villa are thought to want £15 million for his signature.
Liverpool are also thought to be keen on Downing, who was signed from Middlesbrough only two summers ago for £12 million but has recently turned down a new contract. Tottenham have tried to sign the player before whilst Arsenal complete the trio of clubs linked with the player. The 26-year old also scored 7 goals this season having featured 38 times.
The pair, who have 39 England caps between them, are currently away on international duty preparing for this weekend’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland at Wembley.
