According to reports in the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor is a doubt for Sunday’s clash against arch-rivals Birmingham City at St Andrew’s which will be something of a blow for Steve Bruce and the club’s supporters.
The Birmingham Mail says that the attacker is currently nursing a calf injury and having not featured for the Midlands outfit since the draw against Brentford in September, he is struggling to be fit for the fixture against the Blues.
While the 31-year-old has struggled for form and goals in recent years, he has a habit of finding the net against City with his strike in the 1-0 win against them last season being the fifth time he has scored against Villa’s neighbours.
Bruce certainly wouldn’t hesitate to include the forward in his matchday squad this weekend given his birthplace and what has happened in the past, but he will also be confident that his in-form side will be fine without the experienced frontman.
Keinan Davis and Jonathan Kodjia could lead the line despite Josh Onomah replacing the former in the starting line-up in the 2-1 win against Fulham on Saturday, with Scott Hogan available from the substitutes’ bench and winger Albert Adomah also in good goalscoring form.
Villa are fifth in the Championship standings having won five of their last six games after a disappointing start to the campaign, while their hosts on Sunday are just one place and one point above the relegation zone.
