Manchester United face a battle with Barcelona for the signature of Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, according to the Daily Star.
United have been heavily linked with a move that would see the Portuguese star return to Old Trafford, after the Red Devils sold him to Real Madrid for what was a world record £80million back in 2009.
But reports from Spain suggest that Real Madrid’s deadliest rivals Barcelona have also registered their interest in signing the reigning world player of the year.
Spanish newspaper AS went as far to suggest that Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta met Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes to discuss a possible transfer on Friday.
Laporta previously held the top job at Barcelona for seven years, before being edged out in 2010.
Should he return to his previous position, he has promised a marquee signing in order to build support for his return.
Ronaldo’s future at Real Madrid has been the subject of much speculation of late, with some reports suggesting a deal is already in place to see him return to Manchester United.
Former Real Madrid teammate and record Premier League signing Angel Di Maria recently said he was not convinced Ronaldo would stick around much longer in Spain.
“I don’t know how long will he stay in Real Madrid,” he said.
