Liverpool have been boosted in their attempt to sign Maxi Pereira, with Benfica slapping a £4million asking price on the right-back, Mirror reports.
Reds first-choice right-back Glen Johnson is expected to leave Anfield next summer, with his current contract expiring at the end of the season.
This will force manager Brendan Rodgers to find adequate cover, and is considering a move for the Benfica star.
Although Liverpool have been heavily linked with Barcelona ace Martin Montoya, the Reds face a lot of competition from other clubs also interested in the 23-year-old’s signature.
Pereira therefore becomes a viable alternative, and will cost much less that Montoya as the Uruguayan’s contract also expires next summer.
To avoid losing Pereira for free, the Premiera Liga side has demanded £4million in the coming transfer window in order for the 30-year-old to make the switch the Liverpool in January.
The Merseyside club will have to move quickly, as Turkish clubs Besiktas and Trabzonspur are both monitoring the situation.
