Arsenal have been hit by the news that captain Mikel Arteta is set to be sidelined much longer than initially expected, according to the Guardian.
Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has not been able to field Arteta since November 26, when the Spaniard hurt himself in their 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.
Arteta has been struggling with a calf problem, one that has kept reoccurring the past season.
However the defensive-midfielder additionally injured his ankle and it now seems that it may take three to four weeks before the former Everton star can return to the Arsenal line-up.
Wenger has had to deal with an extremely high number of injuries this season, with his latest being the second blow to French right-back Mathieu Debuchy.
Debuchy is set to undergo surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder he sustained last weekend against Stoke City, which could keep him out of action for at least three months.
Summer signing Danny Welbeck is also struggling with an injury, but could be in contention to face champions Manchester City this weekend.
