Brazil Serie A wrap: Corinthians go top, Santos earn first win

Corinthians moved top of the Brazil Serie A, despite being held to a 1-1 draw away to Flamengo on Sunday.Tite’s men took the lead on 19 minutes when Willian found the back of the net at the Estadio Olimpico Joao Havelange, but the hosts were level when Renato Abreu equalised six minutes prior to the break.

The point elevated Corinthians to the top of the table after three games, level with Palmeiras on points and goal difference, but ahead on goals scored.

Gremio recorded back to back wins with a 2-0 victory over Bahia at the Estadio Olimpico Monumental, courtesy of Junior Vicosa’s first-half brace.

Internacional brought up their first triumph of the campaign, with a 4-2 away win at America Mineiro’s Estadio Universitario Pedro Pedrossian.

An Oscar double, along with goals to Andres D’Alessandro and Fernando Cavenaghi, helped the visitors take all three points.

Santos endured some late nerves before posting their first season victory, beating Avai 3-1 at Estadio Urbano Caldeira.

Borges completed a brace in the 53rd minute of the game, and they looked headed for comfortable victory before Avai’s Mauricio Alves pulled a goal back in the 90th minute.

But as the visiting side looked for a dramatic equaliser, Rychely scored to seal the win.

Coritiba’s Anderson Aquino scored a hat-trick in the space of nine minutes to help his side crush Vasco da Gama 5-1 at Estadio Major Antonio Couto Pereira.

Strangely, it was the hosts’ first points of the season, and it was the visitors’ first loss of the campaign.
