Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has made Paraguay international Cristian Riveros his first signing of the summer.
The 27-year-old, who has been included in his country's World Cup squad, moves to Wearside from Mexican Primera Division side CDSC Cruz Azul on a three-year contract.
Bruce signed Riveros' international team-mate Paulo Da Silva from Toluca last summer since when the 30-year-old defender has featured in 21 games for the Black Cats.
Riveros, who moved to Cruz Azul in July 2007, has represented his country on 45 occasions, scoring eight goals.
He told Sunderland's official website after completing his transfer: "The league is very competitive and Sunderland have shown trust in me as a person and as a footballer. The history here is good and I'm delighted to be joining the club."
