Bruce rules out Kirkland swoop

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has rubbished reports that he is poised to launch a £5million raid on former club Wigan Athletic to sign goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

Bruce coached the England international during his 18 months at the DW Stadium.

However, with £10million Scotland keeper Craig Gordon and highly-rated Hungarian Marton Fulop on the books at the Stadium of Light, Bruce has dismissed suggestions that he is keen to sign Kirkland.

Fulop is currently deputising for Gordon while the former Hearts keeper recovers from the broken arm he sustained in November.

"Talk of me bidding £5million for Chris Kirkland is garbage but he's a very good goalkeeper and I'm a big, big admirer of him," Bruce told the Sunderland Echo.

"Some of the players I've been linked with have been ridiculous but you come to expect that in January and there's nothing we can do about that.

"What I will say is that we're working on one or two things and hopefully we can see them progress."
