Manager Steve Bruce has confirmed that Sunderland are hoping to add quality rather than quantity to their squad this summer.
The Black Cats have already snapped up Paraguay international midfielder Cristian Riveros from Mexican club Cruz Azul, but Bruce is not expecting to make a large number of additions.
He told the club's official website:"We're looking for quality, not quantity. The advantage of the position we're in now is that we don't have to make wholesale changes like last year.
"We can pinpoint individual areas we need to strengthen and use the funds we have available to get the right players in at the right price.
"I can't envisage too many changes, but I will say this – the players we do sign will represent another step forward.
"We've got a number of options at the minute, but we will take our time and get the right building blocks in place.
"There is no need to rush. Making the right choices takes time and we won't take risks.
"We'll work as a team and get the best value we possibly can – that is what the supporters deserve."
