Sunderland boss Steve Bruce will take his time in appointing a new captain to replace Lorik Cana.
Cana left the Black Cats after just one season on Wearside with Bruce sanctioning the sale of the Albania international to Turkish side Galatasaray last week.
The midfielder had been installed as captain shortly after his arrival last summer, with Michael Turner and Lee Cattermole front-runners to take the armband ahead of the new campaign.
"I'll have a look, although obviously we're not finished bringing people into the club," Bruce told the club's official website.
"We have some natural leaders here already, too. I'll take two or three weeks to assess what I've got and then make the decision.
"I wouldn't anticipate it being too much earlier than last year."
