Sunderland captain Lorik Cana wants team-mate Kenwyne Jones to remain at the club next term, despite the striker being linked with a move away from the north east in the summer.
Jones, who joined the Black Cats from Southampton in August 2007, has impressed this season when partnering Darren Bent in attack and it was widely thought Liverpool were interested in his services before the January transfer window closed.
Cana understands why there is such interest in the Trinidad & Tobago star but hopes he will stay on Wearside to spearhead their strikeforce next season.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Cana said:"I want him to stay and play with us because he is a great player.
"So definitely he has got the confidence of everybody, his manager and his team-mates have great confidence in Kenwyne.
"He is a fantastic lad, a great guy, especially for myself as I have got a good relationship with him.
"I wish him the best for his career and his family, so if for him it is better to go and have a good opportunity in a bigger team why not?"
