Capello: England can reach final

England coach Fabio Capello has confidently declared that his side can reach the World Cup final ahead of their Group C opener against the United States.

Capello was speaking at his pre-match press conference in Rustenburg following an eight-day training camp in South Africa.

"England are ready for this match," he declared."The first game is always hard because expectation levels are really big, but we have been here eight days, training has gone very well and we are confident.

"We know the expectation levels of the fans is really good. But I am sure the team can reach the final.

"I genuinely believe we have a squad that can make it to the final."

Meanwhile, Capello has revealed that Gareth Barry will be on the substitute's bench.

The Manchester City midfielder was a doubt for the tournament after picking up an ankle ligament injury during a Premier League game in early May.

Barry has not taken a full part in training in South Africa but has slowly been reintroduced to full-contact action and will be on the bench against the US.

Earlier in the week, Capello claimed he already knew his starting XI ahead of the eagerly-anticipated curtain raiser.

Speaking about Barry, he revealed: "He has been training normally for three days – training hard – and he will be on the bench."
