Fabio Capello has revealed his disappointment after admitting that David Beckham is highly unlikely to make his England World Cup squad.
The 34-year-old midfielder ruptured his Achilles tendon while playing for AC Milan against Chievo on Sunday and is all but certainly out of the tournament in South Africa.
Beckham, who has won 115 international caps, was hoping to become the first England player to feature in four World Cups.
"I am very sad for David that he has suffered this injury," said Three Lions boss Capello, with Beckham set to undergo surgery in Finland on Monday in a bid to save his career.
"We have to wait for the results of the scan, but it looks like he is out of the World Cup.
"I spoke with him after the game on Sunday night to offer my support, as did (assistant) Franco Baldini.
"David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup so missing it will be a big blow."
