Carrick boost for England

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick was able to take part in training on Tuesday morning as the countdown to England's crucial World Cup Group C clash against Slovenia gathered pace.

Carrick missed Monday's session with an ankle problem so Ledley King was the only absentee from England's final training session ahead of the game.

The Tottenham star sustained a groin injury in the 1-1 draw with the USA ten days ago and missed the grim goalless stalemate against Algeria.

England head coach Fabio Capello has already said that Matthew Upson will start in central defence alongside John Terry as Jamie Carragher is suspended after the Liverpool stalwart picked up his second yellow card of the tournament against Algeria.

There is also the possibility that Jermain Defoe will replace Emile Heskey in attack with the Tottenham striker starting alongside Wayne Rooney.

Capello may also opt to start with five midfielders as rumours grow that Joe Cole could make his first appearance in South Africa.

England need a win against Slovenia to guarantee their place in the knockout stages of the tournament but a defeat would see them return home.
