Carrick out of England squad

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has pulled out of England’s squad for Saturday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland. The 29-year-old had been recalled to Fabio Capello’s squad for the first time since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after a promising end to the season with United, but he suffered a knock in Saturday’s Champions League final and failed to train on Tuesday.

He arrived at Arsenal’s London Colney training facility carrying a suspected hip injury, but has now been sent home.

Carrick’s absence leaves Capello with 24 players available for the clash with Switzerland at Wembley, with Spurs striker Jermain Defoe and Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale already ruled out.

England are joint top of Group G with Montenegro on 10 points, while Switzerland are in third place with four points.
