Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has confirmed that his club are closing in on the signing of Paraguay international midfielder Cristian Riveros.

The 27-year-old currently plays in Mexico with Cruz Azul, but talks about a move to England are well advanced.

Bruce told the Sunderland Echo:"We're close to a deal on that player and hopefully our fans will hear about it in the very near future.

"He's a South American and he's a player we believe will excite our fans.

"Should we get him in, there'll be no doubting his ability. And the only question will be can he be as successful in English football as he is in South America.

"It will be a good move for him and for us and it will be good for Sunderland fans, too, because they will be able to watch a new signing playing in the World Cup this summer."

Riveros, who has won nearly 50 caps for his country, has been with his current club for around three years.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
